The General Tax Authority announced the completion of tax and customs procedures for the arrival of the first shipment bearing digital tax stamps. Digital tax stamps are
distinctive marks in the form of a physical label or a digital code containing encrypted digital data, that are placed on goods subject to excise tax and are activated electronically.
In July of this year, the General Tax Authority announced the launch of the first stage of the Digital Tax Stamp System to allow importers of tobacco and its derivates registered for excise tax to submit their digital tax stamp applications electronically. The second stage was also applied to other tobacco products on August 4,2022.
The application of the Digital Tax Stamp System on goods subject to excise tax is a reflection of the efforts by the General Tax Authority and the General Authority of Customs in monitoring and tracking the movements of these goods within the Qatari market, ascertaining their source, and ensuring that they are legally traded.
